A regional youth leader has expressed confidence in the abilities of the newly elected Montserrat National Youth Parliament. Kamali Mannix, Founder of the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda, who was instrumental in training the youth parliamentarians, stated he is "1000% confident" in their potential.

"Honour and praise come as a result of hard work. The only way for you to be able to effect positive change, the only way for you to be able to successfully advocate, the only way for you to be able to literally transform what and who Montserrat is, is as a result of hard work."
Kamali Mannix, Founder, National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda

Mannix explained that approximately 25 members underwent training in November, covering public speaking, parliamentary procedure, AI and technology, and event planning. The training was designed not just to educate but to let participants put skills into practice, including panel discussions that helped enthuse them for their roles. The Montserrat Youth Parliament will be sworn in on June 30th.

In disaster preparedness news, Montserrat and other British overseas territories in the Caribbean are set to benefit from critical Royal Navy support during the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. The HMS Trent, which departed from Plymouth in the United Kingdom after intensive training, will work closely with the US Coast Guard to hunt drug traffickers while maintaining readiness for humanitarian disaster response.

The patrol ship will carry experts in humanitarian disaster response, including engineers and drone operators, ready to help island communities during hurricane season (June-November). Commanding Officer Gavin Low expressed excitement about returning to the region and bringing capabilities to support humanitarian aid and disaster relief. HMS Trent will make routine visits to British overseas territories, including Montserrat to deepen relationships and understand each island's hurricane response needs.

The Royal Montserrat Police Service Marine Unit successfully carried out a rescue operation last week after a vessel became stranded in the island's waters. According to the RMPS, the vessel issued a distress call on Wednesday, May 6, after experiencing mechanical difficulties and running out of fuel approximately 16 nautical miles off the coast of Little Bay.

The response was coordinated by Inspector Maxine Lee, with the rescue team including Sgt. Ryan Darrow, Sgt. Delbert Williams, and police constables Sherman Valman, Dion West, Kevillon St. Louis, and St. Luke LeBlanc. Upon reaching the vessel, officers supplied emergency fuel and ensured the craft returned safely to port. The RMPS credited the success to cooperation among several agencies, including the Montserrat Port Authority, HMS Customs, and the Immigration Department. Special recognition was given to Dennis Silcott for monitoring marine radio channels and relaying the distress call quickly.

In other news, Governor Her Excellency Harriet Cross, together with Head of Programs Solomon Nyamandi, were recently given a guided tour of the Delta Bulk Fuel Plant in Carr's Bay ahead of the 2026 hurricane season. The visit revealed significant improvements since flood damage sustained last May, including a newly purchased and installed LPG tank. Governor Cross welcomed the upgrades, noting that expanded storage capacity strengthens the island's disaster resilience.

Sonia Charles, President of the Montserrat Pink Ribbon Charity, Inc., was a guest speaker at the 7th Annual Diabetes Conference 2026 held at the University of East London this week. Her presentation, "Feet for Life: How Vascular Sonography Influenced the Introduction of Podiatry Services in Montserrat," highlighted the need for improved diabetic foot care services and explored how vascular assessment can contribute to diabetic limb preservation.

What This Means for Montserrat Residents

The newly elected Youth Parliament represents a significant investment in developing the next generation of Montserratian leaders, with continued training and integration into the Eastern Caribbean Youth Parliament Network.

HMS Trent's deployment provides dedicated Royal Navy support for disaster response during hurricane season, including specialised personnel and equipment for rapid assistance.

The successful marine rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated emergency response among local agencies and highlights the importance of marine radio monitoring for safety.
