Extensive renovations, including roof restoration, new kitchen facilities, auditorium improvements and accessibility upgrades, are transforming the island's premier cultural venue.

The Montserrat Cultural Centre is poised to reopen its doors with a dramatic transformation, as extensive renovation works enter their final phase. The landmark facility, which has served as the island's premier venue for performances, ceremonies and community gatherings, is receiving comprehensive upgrades that promise to enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal for years to come.
Quick Facts
According to Project Manager Damion Williams, the renovation team has made significant progress across multiple areas of the facility. The comprehensive upgrade project addresses both structural improvements and modern amenities that will elevate the visitor experience.
Completed Works
The renovation team has successfully completed several major components of the project. All roof renovations are now finished, including the application of protective roof sealant and the reinstallation of roof mouldings around the entire perimeter of the buildings. This critical work ensures the facility will be weather-resistant and structurally sound for years to come.
The furniture renovation program has also been completed throughout the facility. This includes new wall-mounted and floor-mounted cabinets in the kitchen, a brand new floor-mounted island, and renovated bar countertops and washing areas. These upgrades modernise the facility's service capabilities and improve functionality for events and catering.
In the auditorium, crews have finished laying carpet in the lower section and have installed approximately 90% of the seating. The team is now focused on floor cleaning and waxing to restore the venue's polished appearance. New skirting boards are being installed throughout the interior walls, adding a refined finish to the space.
📊 Renovation Highlights
Upper Level Improvements
The mock offices on the top floor have been fully renovated, including completed skirting boards in the kitchen, bar area and bathrooms. The old changing room located above the stage has also received comprehensive upgrades, including new skirting boards, toilets, kitchen cupboards, showers, hand dryers, soap dispensers, and rolling partitions for guest privacy during performances.
Williams noted that painting work is approximately 95% complete, with crews awaiting final paint shipments from overseas to touch up walls affected during tile installation and window fitting.
Remaining Work and Timeline
While most renovations remain on schedule, the project has experienced some delays due to supplier shipping issues. A company from Trinidad is expected to arrive to install automatic sliding doors for the changing room, which will complete that section of the facility.
The disabled chairlift, which is already on the island, will have preparatory work beginning this weekend, with installation scheduled for next week. This important accessibility feature will ensure the Cultural Centre is fully inclusive and compliant with modern standards.
Additional doors for the facility are awaiting shipment after supplier delays, though the supplier has committed to expediting delivery at their own expense. The epoxy flooring on the terrace level, replacing the original green paint applied when the centre was built in 2003, will be completed by next week, giving the exterior a fresh, modern appearance that matches the building's colour scheme.
"All the electricals are finished-just the staircase lights in the auditorium remain to be installed when the additional carpet arrives for the upper VIP area. The lower level lights have been installed, and I'm telling you-it looks excellent."
-- Damion Williams, Project Manager
Williams expressed confidence that all work will be completed by the end of July 2026, giving the facility a fresh start for the second half of the year.
A Venue with History
The Montserrat Cultural Centre has stood as a cornerstone of the island's cultural life since its construction in 2003. Over the past two decades, it has hosted countless performances, graduations, government functions, and community events. These renovations represent the most significant investment in the facility since its original construction, ensuring it remains a world-class venue for future generations.
What This Means for Montserrat ResidentsThe renovated Cultural Centre will provide an upgraded venue for performances, ceremonies and community events, enhancing the island's cultural infrastructure.
New accessibility features, including the disabled chairlift, will make the facility more inclusive for all members of the community.
Improved kitchen and bar facilities will better support catering for events, making the venue more attractive for private functions and celebrations.
The modernised auditorium with new seating and lighting will improve the experience for audiences attending performances and gatherings.
As the renovation enters its final weeks, anticipation is building for the reopening of this beloved cultural institution. The upgraded Montserrat Cultural Centre promises to serve as a fitting showcase for the island's artistic talent and a welcoming gathering place for the community.
